Muslim security guards at Paris airport fired for long beards
Two Muslim security guards at a Paris airport claim they were fired because of their long beards – though one insisted his fuzz was only a “hipster fashion.”
After the November terror attacks, officials at Orly Airport asked bearded Muslim workers to adhere to the strict grooming policy because travelers were on edge, The Local reported.
Most complied, but the two accused their bosses of discrimination– and were fired a few days later.
One of them, a 28-year-old called Bachir, said his colleagues had made disparaging comments – including a supervisor who offered “to bring in a lawnmower,” the paper reported.
He insisted that his beard “was for fashion, in a hipster style … and not for religion.”
Bachir also said he had been insulted because of his Muslim faith.
But a spokesman for the Swedish company that employed the men, Securitas, told AFP Bachir had been fired for “serious breaches” of company rules.
The facial hair was “an additional, but not essential factor” in his dismissal, which also was due to absences, tardiness and too much “chattering” at work, the spokesman said.
A lawyer representing the men told BFM TV that he was concerned that some companies have become too paranoid after the attacks.
